OVERVIEW OF

 FIRST UNITED CHURCH UCC

The governing body of the church is a 9-member consistory, which includes three elders, six deacons and the Pastor as an ex officio member.  The church is affiliated with the Alabama-Tennessee Association and the Southeast Conference of the United Church of Christ. The First United Church was founded in 1891 as the Swiss reformed church with the Rev. Johan Von Gruenigen as pastor. Original members were predominately Swiss people of the Reformed tradition.

Reflecting the historic merger of the Reformed Church of the United States and the Evangelical Synod of America, the name of the church then became First Evangelical and Reformed Church in 1934. Another merger in 1957 of the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational Christian Church evolved the United Church of Christ.

The Church was located at 1212 Ninth Ave. N. from 1893 to 1952 when the present property at 3410 Granny White Pike was purchased. The sanctuary was constructed and dedicated in 1955. The educational wing was added and dedicated in 1969.
